Mayer Brown appoints Peter Sugden as new Real Estate Head in London

29 October 2009 - Leading international law firm Mayer Brown has appointed Peter Sugden as Head of Real Estate in London. Peter, who has over 20 years experience in the UK and European property sector, joined Mayer Brown seven years ago. He takes over from Jeremy Clay, who moves to head up the Real Estate practice globally, while continuing to advise UK and international clients. The appointments take immediate effect.

Peter Sugden is a transactional partner whose practice focuses primarily on UK and European real estate investment and development, including joint venture and other structured real estate transactions. He advises a broad spectrum of clients, working primarily with institutions, private equity and opportunity funds, property companies and pension funds. He also acts for a number of developers, particularly in the context of mixed-use schemes.  Peter joined Mayer Brown in 2002 having previously been a partner at two other prominent law firms in the UK.

Mayer Brown has a leading domestic and international Real Estate practice, with over 23 lawyers in London and more than 170 globally. Over 90 per cent of the firm's 21 offices have Real Estate capabilities, meaning the firm can offer both tailored local advice and multi-jurisdictional counsel in the Americas, Asia and Europe, ensuring clients’ needs are met wherever they are located.

Notable recent engagements for the team include advising:
  • Capital & Counties on its acquisition of the Covent Garden Estate for £421.5m including the Covent Garden Market and subsequently advising on further acquisitions in the Covent Garden area with a combined value of over £250m including the retail element of the Royal Opera House.
  • GE Real Estate UK on numerous acquisitions, refurbishments, joint ventures and sales of London office buildings.
  • Canary Wharf Group on entering into a joint venture with a MSREF Fund in relation to a 300,000 square foot office development in the City of London.
  • Unilever on the major redevelopment of Unilever’s global headquarters, Unilever House, by a Stanhope Bovis Lend Lease joint venture.
  • SloaneCap Limited on the acquisition and sale of Standard Chartered Bank’s UK headquarters in the City of London.
  • Private equity fund JER Partners on the purchase of morethanhotels, comprising 11 budget hotels in the UK.
  • On over 200 Data Centre transactions in 40 countries in the last few years.
