Marjan Batchelor is a senior associate in Mayer Brown's Houston office and a member of the Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice. She represents clients in a wide range of complex litigation matters.
She has significant experience with toxic tort cases, antitrust litigation, and cases involving the financial services industry. In the toxic tort arena, she has represented large corporations in cases involving water and soil contamination claims and remediation. Her antitrust matters have involved allegations of price-fixing and collusion in the chemical, automotive, and food and beverage industries. Her financial services industry experience includes wrongful foreclosure, mortgage loan modification, and a number of cases related to other lending and credit reporting regulations.
Recently, Marjan led a large team of attorneys defending a large, multinational food and beverage company in two high profile personal injury cases involving a trucking accident. The parties achieved a successful resolution of the matter. Additionally, in September 2022, Marjan played a key role in an associate-led trial in which the firm sought attorney's fees from the City of Houston in connection with a client's Public Information Act request. Marjan and her colleagues won both the bench and jury trial, securing a $1.2 million jury verdict on behalf of Mayer Brown.
Marjan also has experience with complex e-discovery, client counseling on antitrust deal-related regulations, and defending against class action lawsuits.
Marjan is a leader in the firm’s efforts to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a co-leader of the Mayer Brown Black Lawyers group and a member of the firm's Recruiting Committee, Marjan is committed to recruiting and retaining diverse and young attorneys, and spends significant time mentoring and advising them along their career paths. She also devotes significant time to pro bono efforts, with a focus on voter education, asylum, child welfare and protection, and securing protective orders for victims of domestic violence. She also enjoys volunteering with high school and college students, educating them about the legal profession and how to best position themselves for success in spite of financial and other limitations.
Before joining the firm, Marjan was a business litigation associate at a Minneapolis-based firm, where she worked for two years after serving as a judicial clerk for Justice Alan C. Page of the Minnesota Supreme Court and Judge Paul A. Magnuson at the federal district court level.
During law school, Marjan was heavily involved in Boston University’s Civil Litigation Clinic, where she acted as the lead student attorney in a legal malpractice trial in which her clients prevailed. Marjan has also worked with BU Law’s clinical programs educating students, assisting clinical professors with research, and participating in the interview process for prospective clinical instructors. Before law school, Marjan worked for Wells Fargo as a home mortgage auditor, at a human rights non-profit organization, as a caregiver to special needs children, and as a newspaper editor.
