Mayer Brown advised Insight Chicago on its acquisition of Mercy Hospital & Medical Center from Trinity Health Corporation, in a deal that promises to keep the Bronzeville hospital open after months of uncertainty regarding its future. The sale is expected to close on June 1, 2021.

The announcement elates many members of the South Side community, who were faced with the possibility of losing a health care resource that has existed in the community for generations. Mercy Hospital is Chicago’s oldest hospital. It opened in 1852 and has operated in its current location at the intersection of 26th Street and Michigan Avenue since 1968.

“The Mayer Brown team (led by Tom Thraya and Ryan Ferris) were simply outstanding, both in terms of their legal might and expertise as well as their ability to help Insight navigate the many commercial and regulatory matters on the transaction,” said Atif Bawahab, Chief Strategy Officer at Insight.

Lead Mayer Brown partner Tom Thraya said, “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to bring the full resources of Mayer Brown to this important and historic transaction that will undoubtedly positively impact the lives and health of many Chicagoans.”

The Mayer Brown team was led by Corporate & Securities partner Tom Thraya (Dubai/Washington DC) and associate Ryan Ferris and Restructuring partner Tom Kiriakos (both Chicago) and included: Tax Transactions & Consulting – partner Remmelt Reigersman (NorCal); Real Estate Markets – partner Ahmad Nofal and associate Jason Fried; Employment & Benefits – partner Stephanie Vasconcellos; Litigation & Dispute Resolution – counsel Kim Leffert and Jaimy Hamburg and associate Corwin Carr; and Corporate & Securities – associates Peter Osornio (all Chicago.)
