Mayer Brown continues expansion of LA office and data privacy capabilities with Arsen Kourinian
Leading data privacy lawyer Arsen Kourinian has joined Mayer Brown as a partner in the Cybersecurity & Data Privacy practice in Los Angeles, continuing the firm’s West Coast expansion. Mr. Kourinian advises a global clientele of multinational corporations on compliance with data privacy laws in the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Africa, Middle East and Asia. He is also a trusted member of the cybersecurity community, and receives briefings from the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding cyber threats to the private sector. He joins from Perkins Coie.
Mr. Kourinian provides practical and operational guidance on how to harmonize data privacy laws and standards into uniform policies, procedures and practices. He regularly helps clients with privacy policies, adtech standards and data flows, cross-border data transfers, data privacy and security due diligence assessments for mergers and acquisitions, vendor contracts, privacy by design and human resources data.
In addition to data privacy counseling, Mr. Kourinian helps companies respond to security incidents, including domestic and international breach notification obligations. He has conducted over 300 internal investigations related to identity theft and fraud for financial institutions and handled the regulatory reporting arising from these incidents. Mr. Kourinian also advises companies’ officers and directors regarding their obligations under data privacy and security laws. This includes training boards and C-suite on implementing internal controls in their companies to ensure readiness to address data privacy and security laws and incidents, preparing incident response plans specifically tailored for officers and directors, and improving companies’ cyber score for environmental, social and governance ratings.
“I’m thrilled to join Mayer Brown’s privacy team to help clients harmonize their global compliance plans and build data protection into their organizational DNA,” said Mr. Kourinian. “Data privacy is not localized to one region. With more than 100 data protection laws throughout the US and internationally, companies must remain cognizant of laws regardless of location. Mayer Brown’s strong global presence makes it exceptionally well-positioned to advise clients on the rapidly changing data privacy environment.”
Mr. Kourinian is a certified data privacy professional, and holds the fellow of information privacy (FIP) and certified information privacy professional (CIPP) credentials through the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) for the US (CIPP/US), Europe (CIPP/E), Canada (CIPP/C) and Asia (CIPP/A). He also holds the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) certified information privacy manager (CIPM) designation and Privacy Management Professional certificate through OneTrust. He further helps educate the next generation of data privacy professionals by serving as the chair of the CIPP/US Exam Development Board and authoring questions for this exam.
“Arsen is an exceptional practitioner with an outstanding track record of helping clients think holistically when it comes to data privacy compliance,” said John Nadolenco, managing partner of Mayer Brown’s Los Angeles office. “Joining forces with Dominique and others, he will be a terrific addition to our expanding West Coast offerings for clients across our international firm.”
An authority in data privacy and adtech, Mr. Kourinian has published many articles regarding nuanced issues in these fields, presented on these topics for numerous organizations and trade association groups and worked with companies to shape the data protection landscape in this ever-evolving area.
