At A Glance

We represented the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as lenders on a project to better manage waste in Vietnam’s Binh Duong province.
  • The Province

Just north of Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong is rapidly transforming from farmland to a manufacturing hub for products sold worldwide.
  • The Problem

As Binh Duong’s industrial output and population quickly grow, so does the volume of industrial and municipal waste—a mounting challenge for the province’s industrial solid-waste handler, BIWASE.
  • The Answer

With ADB’s and JICA’s financing, BIWASE will expand a composting plant to process 840 tons of waste a day and add a waste-to-energy incinerator that can process 200 tons of waste a day.
  • The Alignment

Sustainability and inclusivity in the Asia-Pacific are core to ADB’s and JICA’s work.

This project aligns with both concerns: besides addressing environmental issues, the project will provide equal pay, which also syncs with BIWASE’s commitment to closing the gender gap.

THE EXPANDED BINH DUONG PLANT WILL BE ABLE TO COMPOST 840 TONS OF WASTE A DAY, A WEIGHT ROUGHLY THAT OF:

  • 2 Eiffel Towers

  • 560 Elephants

  • 5,100 Cars

This project addresses the pressing need for efficient waste management in Binh Duong province and provides a strong case for commercial lenders to consider future investments to make cities more livable and develop ways of generating renewable energy that help tackle the causes of climate change.
