Mayer Brown has been honored by The Legal Aid Society at its annual Pro Bono Publico Awards.

Mayer Brown litigators worked with The Legal Aid Society to successfully secure the transfer of a transgender female prisoner to a women’s prison after she spent nearly a decade in a men’s prison, and for several years had unsuccessfully sought transfer to a gender-aligned facility. This significant development came after a demand letter was submitted to the New York Department of Corrections, detailing the ways in which the state was violating the US Constitution, Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act, and State Human Rights Law by refusing her prior transfer requests and forcing her to remain in a men’s prison.

The Legal Aid Society honors the contributions of volunteer lawyers, law firms, corporations, and other professionals who dedicate their time and expertise to offer outstanding legal services to low-income New Yorkers.
