Marcelo Richter, a Senior Associate in Mayer Brown’s London office, has experience in international commercial and investment treaty arbitration and public international law.

Marcelo’s practice is focused on cross-border, high-stakes disputes involving parties and applicable laws from a wide-range of jurisdictions. In respect of investment treaty arbitration and public international law, Marcelo represents foreign investors and sovereign states in disputes before ICSID and under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. A substantial part of Marcelo's work also includes representing parties in commercial and engineering & construction arbitrations before major arbitral institutions, such as ICC, LCIA, SIAC, HKIAC and ADCCAC. He has acted in large-scale disputes involving airports, maritime projects, hydroelectric facilities, solar power plants and other infrastructure and superstructure projects.

Marcelo regularly publishes on international arbitration and has attended and presented at conferences and universities. Marcelo holds a Master of Laws (LL.M), with Distinction, in Comparative and International Dispute Resolution from Queen Mary University of London.

Investment Treaty Arbitration

  • ICSID Case No. ARB/21/23: represented claimants in an investment treaty arbitration under the Turkey-Turkmenistan BIT and the ICSID Convention. Imeks Insaat Makina Elektrik Konstrüksiyon Sanayi Limited Sirketi v. Turkmenistan.
  • ICSID Case No. ARB/21/20: represented Turkish investors in an investment treaty arbitration in the construction sector against Turkmenistan.
  • ICSID Case No. ARB/13/38: represented Kuwaiti investors in an investment treaty arbitration in the telecommunication sector against Jordan.
  • ICSID Case No. ARB/16/3: represented French investors in an investment treaty arbitration in the heating and power generation sectors against Lithuania.
  • PCA Case No. 2020-53: represented American and Canadian investors in an investment treaty arbitration in the media sector under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules against Romania.
