Michael J. Gill
Litigation & Dispute Resolution, Global Investigations & White Collar Defense
Overview
With experience from more than 50 jury trials, bench trials, and arbitrations, clients turn to Mike Gill to develop strategies to successfully resolve and, when necessary, to try complex commercial disputes, as well as leveraging his broad range of experience to evaluate, through internal investigations, companies’ criminal, regulatory and civil exposures and advise them on risks and remedies.
Mike’s trial work focuses on disputes involving breaches of contract, technology issues, mergers & acquisitions, products liability, financial fraud, real estate, and trusts and estates. His recent successes include defending an SEC investigation of an electronic vehicle manufacturer that was ultimately closed without action, obtaining summary judgment in favor of a provider of technology services in a False Claims Act lawsuit, securing an arbitration award in favor of a large gaming company in a contract dispute, and achieving a settlement that resulted in a win for his client in an arbitration involving royalties due under an international licensing agreement.
Experience
Mike’s experience includes:
- Won a challenge before the Chicago Board of Elections to Rahm Emanuel’s candidacy for Mayor of Chicago. Objectors had argued Emanuel was not a resident of the City of Chicago (a requirement to become mayor) because he had lived in Washington D.C. as President Obama's Chief of Staff.
- Obtained a judgment for fraud in arbitration against the manager of an LLC owning a resort property. Following judgment, the other member of the LLC, a private equity firm, took control of the LLC, which resulted in a significantly improved financial return for the firm’s investors.
- Obtained a judgment for Tenneco Inc. against El Paso Corporation in Delaware Chancery Court that preserved the historical property and casualty insurance coverage of Tenneco in connection with a corporate spin-off transaction.
- Represented a major telecommunication company in a DOJ investigation of corruption in the Illinois General Assembly
- Secured a judgment for Standard Chartered Bank against the FDIC for the Bank’s loss in a fraudulent international wire transfer scheme.
