New York/Chicago, June 4, 2024 – Mayer Brown today announced that Jon Van Gorp, chair of the firm since June 2021, has been elected to a second three-year term. The firm has also elected New York Managing Partner Matthew Ingber as a new member of its management committee.

Under Jon’s leadership over the past three years—a challenging time marked by a global pandemic and social and geopolitical unrest—Mayer Brown has continued its long-term trajectory of steady revenue and profitability growth. The firm’s total revenue in 2023 reached $1.9 billion—an increase of more than 25% over Jon’s first term as chair. Mayer Brown’s profits per partner rose by 21.6% to nearly $2.5 million in the past three years.

Mayer Brown promoted 117 lawyers to partnership over the past three years, underscoring its commitment to organic growth and dedication to succession planning. The firm also added an additional 85 lateral partners.

During Jon’s tenure, Mayer Brown has prioritized the strategic alignment and expansion of its client offerings across its international platform. In 2022, the firm opened its newest office in Salt Lake City, bolstering the firm’s offerings to the technology, emerging company and investment communities in Utah and beyond. Mayer Brown’s New York office continues its accelerated growth, recently topping 300 lawyers as the firm looks to meet the demands of the corporations, funds and financial institutions that operate there at the highest level.

Outside the US, the firm recently announced an agreement in principle to form two distinctive partnerships in Hong Kong, which will allow Mayer Brown to continue its presence there with a practice that aligns with its strategic priorities. In 2022, the firm announced its Joint Law Venture with Singapore law firm PK Wong & Nair LLC to provide clients with an integrated service, offering seamless advice on international and Singapore law. That same year, the firm enhanced its Middle East capabilities with a cooperation agreement with Al Akeel & Partners.

To maintain its position as one of the world’s leading international law firms, under Jon’s stewardship, Mayer Brown recently unveiled a three-year strategic plan. A core pillar of the plan focuses on leveraging the firm’s fundamental strengths to accelerate growth in key products and industries where the firm can deliver distinctive layered expertise between multiple practices and offices to handle its clients’ most important matters and solve their most complex problems. These areas include: Insurance; Projects, Infrastructure, and Energy; Funds and Asset Management; International Arbitration; Capital Markets; Lending and Private Credit; Financial Services Regulatory; and industry-specific Mergers and Acquisitions.

“I am honored by the trust and faith that my fellow partners have shown in me by re-electing me chair of this outstanding firm for another term,” said Jon. “As we look to the future, our unified vision that merges our respective commitments to excellence and robust client service will enable us to exceed our strategic milestones—securing our position as a formidable international powerhouse in our industry.”

At 54 years old, Jon has spent nearly his entire career at Mayer Brown. Prior to becoming chair in 2021, he served as co-leader of the firm’s Banking & Finance, Capital Markets and Structured Finance practices. He is seen as a true innovator who has earned a reputation as a top structured finance lawyer, playing a leading role in many first-of-their-kind transactions.
