Mayer Browns Raj De appointed by US attorney general as judge of Data Protection Review Court

Mayer Brown partner Raj De was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to serve as a judge of the Data Protection Review Court (DPRC).

DPRC was created as the second level of a new redress process established through President Biden’s 2022 executive order on Enhancing Safeguards for United States Signals Intelligence Activities. The attorney general issued regulations creating the DPRC within the Office of Privacy and Civil Liberties at the Department of Justice. DPRC judges will independently review cases filed by EU residents that allege certain violations of US law in the conduct of US signals intelligence activities.

At Mayer Brown, Raj is a member of the firm’s global Management Committee. He leads the firm’s global Cybersecurity & Data Privacy practice and co-leads the National Security practice. Before returning to private practice, Raj served as general counsel at the National Security Agency. He also served in the White House as staff secretary and deputy assistant to the President of the United States and as principal deputy assistant attorney general in the Office of Legal Policy at the Department of Justice.

Raj previously served on a pro bono basis as general counsel to the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism. He also previously served as counsel to a special bipartisan staff of the United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and as counsel to the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States.
